So Perfect Season < Imperfect Season?

No. But that doesn't mean a team with no losses in one year is better than a team with one loss in another.

As I pointed out before, the 1979 Alabama team finished with a perfect season but they were not as good as the team that came the year before. Why? Because the '78 team played three teams ranked in the Top 15 in their FIRST THREE GAMES and even played a decent team from a major conference, on the road, in their fifth game. Adding to that, they finished out the season playing (and beating) the #1 team in the nation in their bowl game. That's a pretty grueling schedule.

The '79 Alabama team played all of two ranked teams in the regular season. The SEC sucked balls that year. Looking at the two schedules, it's easy to see why one team finished undefeated and the other did not.

I understand that argument based on the glaring difference in strength of schedule. But that argument doesn't hold up when the difference in strength of schedule is nearly negligible.
