Weren't the city limits of Tuscaloosa extended all the way across the county to include the Mercedes plant? If so, then Tuscaloosa and Birmingham are now more like 25 miles apart.

That's about right. The Tuscaloosa city limits encompass Coaling and Vance now. The Mercedes manufacturing plant and its subsidiaries lead to a lot of people commuting from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa for work. There are more and more jobs being added, relative to the automotive industry.

As time goes on, at least as it stands now, the two metro areas will become more like the megaregions of the east coast (though it's obviously a much smaller scale). But you still have a combined population of 1.5 million.
