I guarantee that if Bo Ryan was coaching at UK, they'd be undefeated with no margin of victory less than 15 points.

But doesn't that contradict...

UK could lose the next game
Since they are, quite literally, facing the best competition just now?

How do you not give it to Cal if he wins the tourney with no losses the entire year?
It's truly amazing. It's like Secretariat was to horse racing.
Apparently Cal read my comment because Rachel Nichols JUST POSTED this:
@Rachel__Nichols: John Calipari just told me he's been using stories of Secretariat w/his #Kentucky players this week, as a metaphor going into the #FinalFour

are you always the smartest guy in the room?
it's the final 4 that has three 1 seeds. I'd hope it's the best competition they've played all year.
the point is that he won a lot of games in a power 5 conference. That has to count for something.
eta all of his games

Are you essentially saying that once a coach reaches a certain level where he can get the best talent in the country, he should no longer be in consideration for COY because he has a significant advantage?
No, I'm not saying eliminated. I'm saying you don't ignore it.
Hypothetical situation with made up people...maybe this will help see the folly in hard/fast "rules" on COY.
Coach A - been at his school, say, 5 years. Has a roster of players he recruited that happen to be great. Preseason # 1. Finish season #1. Never lose.
Coach B - just arrived at his school. Inherited a roster with massive holes that went 12-22 the previous year. You're expected to finish at the bottom of the conference. But by some miracle, the team gels and has a fantastic season. They finish 35 - 4 after losing in the final 4.
Coach B never had a chance to establish his "advantage that said coach created for himself." He just got there. Coach of the year.
And since many of you only deal in black and white absolutes...both coaches in my hypothetical are great coaches.

Unless you're Oregon football, amirite guys?

The funny thing is that even right down to Buffalo they played several NCAA tournament teams in the OOC. But at this point they beat both of the teams in the ACC Tournament Final (UNC and ND) and the Big 12 Regular Season Champ (Kansas). If they beat Wisconsin you can add the B1G Tournament and Regular Season Champ to that too.
But I'm sure someone will find a way to bitch about the quality of who they played if they go undefeated.

A whole thread of people talking about potential reasons why Cal shouldn't win it, it hasn't come up yet, but you're sure that someone will bitch about the strength of schedule?
Woe is Kentucky.

Is this thread the encapsulation of any and all arguments on this subject? And yes, people have argued that if he was in other conferences he doesn't go undefeated.
ETA: You yourself even threw out an Oregon jab.

So you think getting 7 or 8 All American future NBA players to leave their egos in the locker room is equal to a coach putting the X's & O's in place to put 7 or 8 student athletes in position to compete at the same level??? You can't be serious.
If it's so easy then how come there are numerous examples throughout all of sports of ultra talented teams not doing well at all?

Please list the teams that have had 5+ McDonald's All Americans on the same roster that didn't do well?

Merely to show an SEC double standard. "They're in a P5 conference and went undefeated," sounds great when it's used to justify an SEC team getting recognition. But I don't think I've ever heard anyone on the SEC rant say that Oregon had proven anything just because they've had similar success...in a P5 conference.
Good 'ole rantard switcheroo.

I know you're being a bit of a smartass but that's not true of all of us. I think Cal is deserving and I also think a few others are too. Even with their insane roster, it's damn hard to do what they've done. Even the best NBA teams drop regular season games.

And even I haven't said he shouldn't. I think there are other coaches who may deserve it more, but I certainly wouldn't be MAD about him winning.

Not the best comparison, though. NBA teams play NBA teams. UK is almost like the 76'ers playing the best D-league team.

I can't think of a reason that Coach Calipari should not win this award. I can't imagine having a perfect season in Basketball. I don't think it's fair to give a coach(of any sport) the award of coach of the year just because he may have done more with less. I mean he may have the best talent, but he is the one that worked the recruiting trail to get them there. He is the one that keeps KY at a level that they want to come there. I'm not a big basketball fan anymore, but I do want KY to win the national championship. I hope they have a perfect season and they bring it home. I guess I am a SEC homer, because except for Auburn(you know how we feel about each other, I'd like to see a SEC team bring home every championship. I had rather it be Bama, but if we can't I like for another SEC team to do it. Go Wildcats.

I can't argue with you there.
Hell even the women's team UCONN has fielded this year is like that. Although, I can't blame either one for recruiting well and coaching well, I don't think it's particularly good for the game there to be that much disparity in either game.

I don't know what you're even talking about at this point. Please see my Stretch Armstrong post.
