The thing about most of these "mid-majors".....basketball is king there. The upper echelon mid-major guys can hold out for a top job. Money aside, bama just is not a top job. IMO, they are going to need to find the best up and comer available.

I don't blame him at all. He's dominating and in the tourney regularly. Having a 64 team tournament makes mid major jobs that pay well more attractive.

Just heard the news. Sorry to hear that Bama.
Not Really.
Not Really.

ESPN is reporting that Marshall feared the Saban's culture of corruption would reach across the athletic department and infect his team.

When you're considering a job offer, where does money fall on the scale of things you consider?

speaking of, i haven't heard much this week how saban was going to help draw a good basketball coach.

It would play a factor. I am a southern boy. I wouldn't move to Minnesota for double my salary. That being said......the established mid-major coaches are already multi-millionaires. These guys are on the fast track to getting an elite job.
ETA If you go to bama and don't succeed, you have to start at the bottom of the ladder and try to work your way back up. That is a factor I have not seen you mention one time.

He is now a top 20 paid college coach (not basketball coach, just coach). He's the 6th highest paid college basketball coach (according to what I could find, he might be just behind Izzo, which would make him 7th) in the US and the highest paid basketball coach without a National Championship.
So the "mid-major" distinction is largely irrelevant.

I can almost guarantee that this played no factor in Marshall's decision. He didn't even consider that he might fail at Bama.

UAB is paying their bball coach 1m. I bet Marshall wouldn't have turned down 5m. Hint hint.

You have no idea what played into his decision. Yes, he got a substantial raise. He also left roughly $1.1 mill. a year on the table and supposedly an infinite recruiting budget and total control of the program.

That still does not change the fact that he opted to take less money at a mid major rather than take more money and coach at Alabama.
I see what you're saying, and it has merit, because Wichita St. is a high paying mid major job. But my point still stands.
I don't think so. In my limited memory, most successful mid major coaches have welcomed the challenge of taking a job at a higher profile school.

I know you're not asking me, but I'll respond anyway. It's the first thing I look for in a job. It's certainly not an end-all-be-all, and I wouldn't just take any position that paid more than my current one. But leaving 1.1M on the table is not something I'd be comfortable doing, whether I'm already wealthy or not.

Shaka Smart has turned down major jobs before. But he's being paid like he's at a high profile P5 school. Just like Marshall.
ETA: Few has turned down some major offers as well, reportedly.

Salary is only part of these guys' total income. Marshall did what was right for him, no harm there.

Agree. It's not like Alabama got turned down by some nobody mid major guy. He got a 7 year 3.3/year contract to coach at a place where he is a God and can win with 2 star talent. He doesn't have to deal with insane boosters, AAU coaches, or recruiting non stop against Calipari, Donovan, Pearl, etc. I would have stayed for 3.3 million as well.

Shaka Smart's guaranteed salary is $1.45 mill.

Shaka is just waiting for a top tier program. He is young and he is playing the game the right way. He hasn't just jumped at the first school to up his salary.

He made $1.8 with bonuses and incentives last year IIRC.

Well that is far from... "he's being paid like he's at a high profile P5 school". He is holding out for a top tier job. I would bet good money he has turned down significant raises from school's he feels like it would be an uphill battle to coach at.
There are a few coaches at the mid-major level who hold all the cards. Marshall and Smart are two of them. Just off the top of my head, Few is the only other one that I can think of. Few has proven he is happy at Gonzaga. Marshall and Smart have proven that they are looking for an established elite program to take over.
