But it still largely makes no sense. Why can't the school itself decide what's best for the school? Why must IHL control the actions of all in-state universities? It seems unneeded, and would be much more efficient if the schools were just allowed to choose for themselves.

Every school has a governing oversight group. Call it a Board of Trustees, Board of Regents or an agency that oversees all public 4 year universities in our state; called IHL. So if Ole Miss had its own BOT and they decided that it was time for Dan to go, would that make it more palatable?
IHL existed long before the Ayers' case was settled but I suspect to ensure that it is followed and the money divvied according to the settlement, one oversight board over all 8 schools is needed.

DISCLAIMER: My opinion on this has nothing to do with whether or not their decision was the right one. I am familiar with every OM Chancellor since Porter Fortune and I like Dan. First met him in probably 1993. But, I don't know what they know. They used to sign my paycheck.

We need to have our own Board of Trustees. There is NO reason that MSU and USM alums on the board should be deciding what's best for Ole Miss. It's utterly ridiculous. That being said, I know at least 3 Om alums on the IHL voted to not renew his contract. There may be more, I haven't checked.
