Non VIP content from AUC on day 1 -

Josh Holsey and Jonathan Jones appeared to be the starting cornerbacks. Tray Matthews and Rudy Ford appeared to be the starting safeties. Early enrollee Tim Irvin was at nickel in the same rotation as Matthews and Holsey.

***

Former cornerback T’Sharvan Bell, who is teaching and coaching now in Dublin, Ga., was on hand to watch. He said he hopes to break into college coaching, even if it is as a graduate assistant.

Bell will be long remembered for his sack of quarterback Greg McElroy that all but clinched Auburn’s 28-27 Iron Bowl victory in 2010.

***

Also among the visitors for practice were Chad Slade, Pat Miller and Reese Dismukes, offensive linemen who finished their careers last season. All have hopes of playing on in the NFL.

***

Former secondary coach and administrator Phillip Lolley was in town to “watch some drills and try to learn something.” Lolley is headed toward his second season with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

***

Jason Smith caught punts, along with Marcus Davis. Peyton Barber, Jovon Robinson and Stanton Truitt all worked returning kicks.

***

During the viewing period open to the media, defensive coordinator Will Muschamp did not seem to focus on a particular position group.

***

Offensive line coach J.B. Grimes firmly told his charges that offensive linemen do not scoop and score. He said it’s more likely to result in the other team getting the ball. He relented that maybe it would be OK if the ball was on the opponent’s 1-yard line.

***

Defensive end Carl Lawson, who missed all of last season after knee surgery, looked to be full-speed during drills. That probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. He participated in full-speed drills during bowl practice.
