Bert isn't going to string some other kid along as a "backup plan" and then ditch him on NSD if we get the big name guy. We rolled the dice on a few spots and came up short, no big deal.
We could have filled those 5 slots with players that would never see the field. But now we can sign 25 next year and still leave 5 spots open for rolling the dice.

or we could of had 5 guys to fill roles on special teams. There isn't anything wrong with telling a guy hey you should come here and I want you, but here is where you stand with us on the board of recruits so if player x decides not to come here you're the next guy we want. You have potential but he's a little more polished, we do like your athleticism though.

Wasn't expecting to get Fulton, even if he wanted to go here.
Wasn't thinking Cleveland was a sure thing, nor Porter although I thought we had shots at both.
But this lying arse Putu (Mr. Loyalty) kind of chaps my arse.
Frick you, Putu.

Bett said Harris left his Bama official early because he didn't like it at all.

You think those 5 open spots can't be filled on special teams by the other 80 to 100 roster kids?

Keep pumping sunshine.
Bert isn't a lights out recruiter so requires depth...yet he left five schollies on the table, he's not happy about it and most fans are smart enough to realize that's not a good thing.

I'm simply saying that Bert wanted 25, per his lips. We did not get what he set out for. And it wasn't really all that close.
Is that the world ending? No. It's one aspect in his overall job performance which includes about a thousand things. So maybe we could just acknowledge a single reality without it having to represent the whole damn thing. It doesn't. It is one ingredient in the main dish.
this has been established several times.

What if we just had legit backup plans?
let's wait and see what we finish the class off with before saying they had no legit backup plans

I CAN'T come to terms with our not being able to meet the coach's goal within a 20% margin.
the goal is still attainable since the class isn't finished yet.

Seems like when we whiffed on the big guys there had to be other guys we could have had lined up. FLorida did it with Putu - once they whiffed on the blue chip DB's they extended the offer and got him, I know there are five solid players that signed today with lesser schools that we could have done the same thing with. Failure on Bert's part to plan and execute signing day.

According to?
the guys covering recruiting that have talked about barry sanders jr, that OT that was committed to michigan for a long time, and those grad transfers that have been discussed

I'm pretty sure our coaching staff has a plan for those scholarships, if they actually end up becoming available. Missing out on those targets sucked but you're nuts if you think our coaches didn't consider the possibility of them going elsewhere.
They're either grossly incompetent or they have a plan you don't know about. I'll go with the latter cuz ya'll are some ignorant motherfrickers

But national signing day is the only day of the year a player can sign with us now it's too late
Posted on 2/3/16 at 10:45 pm to dbeck
I mean... A graduate transfer is definitely better than nothing. But it's not going to feed the redshirt program, which is something we need to keep doing.
Posted on 2/3/16 at 10:50 pm to dbeck
the semantics of this argument are ridiculous.
We have 3 three stars and 1 two star walking on.
if Bert gave them the schollies right now, we'd be at 24.
instead we have those guys walking on plus 4 scholarships for transfers and anyone else that didnt sign today.
who gives a sht that nutt would have had 25. we could have also with no walk on program but we convinced them to walk on and earn them first.
why melt over something so dumb?

Why not? Grad comes in providing instant depth allowing underclassmen to redshirt.

Exactly. I'd rather have a grad transfer come in and play backup or on special teams and keep a redshirt on a freshman. If we get lucky with a grad transfer, maybe we get a starter or someone who contributes in a rotation.
A grad transfer who contributes and replaces someone who transfers out of the program is a net gain. And if they only have one year of eligibility, we get that scholarship back the very next year and the redshirt we kept on a freshman comes off and we have someone with a year in there program who can step up while we redshirt the new recruit.
But this relies on us getting a good grad transfer. There's still work to be done and there's still a risk it doesn't work out.

I like the way you guys are seeing it. I think that makes sense.
