Many years ago, I taught for three years in an overwhelmingly white affluent Texas suburb that was very conservative. I have kept in touch with many of my former students. They are now around 30 years old and are, with only three exceptions that I can think of right now, essentially communist in their outlook and at odds with the politics of the families that raised them. Thus the case of Athens is not a surprise to me.
