The only point I was trying to make is that you can't hold the USA accountable for slavery that took place before there was a USA.

The United States or the "New World" abolished slavery after 245 years.

I can't believe we are carefully scrutinizing the historical accuracy of statements made by scholarly athletes while participating in the act of raping an unconscious woman.

Their collective actions, with or without the alleged statement in the OP, is more than enough testimony that they were pretty damn numb to the victim's worth as a human being.
