Reserved in case of an unheard-of flurry of activity on the board
Any thoughts on the upcoming schedule? I like that we start off with another West Coast team, but this time in Nashville. I really like what Corbin did with his annual trip to the West Coast. The UCLA, USC, and TCU weekend will be a real test for the team, but the beginning of the schedule is pretty soft. Fortunately, we get Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and Florida at home. No LSU or State. Still, conference play should be brutal.
As to the lineup, this is what Kendall Rogers at D1 Baseball projects:
I think the only weakness in this staff is the lack of lefties. We have Bowden, Kilichowski, Pfeifer, and Johnson, a redshirt freshmen. That's not much proven depth. I'm curious to see how Pfeifer will do coming back this year.

This year's OOC schedule is actually tougher than previous years. I think Rogers projected lineup is pretty close. A little concerned about Nolan in CF and have heard good things about Toffey. It's a shame that X couldn't keep things straight.
I have confidence in Bowden and Kilichowski. They had plenty of success in pressure spots last year. Depending on how Pfeifer comes back, I suspect he'll be the mid-week starter. If he's close to his early 2013 form, that's a ridiculous starting staff.
IMO, the biggest challenge about this year will be getting used to getting every team's best game all season long. Can't wait for the season to start.

Have season tickets gone out yet?
Posted on 1/20/15 at 7:21 am to Vandyrone
I was thinking it was softer because of the Stanford matchup last year as well as Long Beach State, which are both stronger than any teams we have a series with this year. The TCU, USC, and UCLA weekend are the only teams we play in the top 100 in last year's RPI.

Honestly I forgot about Long Beach State last year. Those 2 series (Stanford being the other) were tough. I guess the TCU, USC UCLA weekend really has my attention as a tough road challenge this season.
Season tickets haven't gone out yet. Single game tickets went on sale yesterday.

Thanks Athanatos! I hope the basketball kids grow up quickly, but afraid it's not going to happen soon enough. Definitely ready for baseball!

The upside of playing on the west coast is recruiting exposure in addition to game exposure.

Absolutely. Though Tyler Campbell is the only guy I can think of that's from the West Coast.
Interesting stat:
quote:
For the first time in school history a Vanderbilt men's team opens the season as the No. 1 team in the nation. It marks the first time since the 2007-08 season that any Vanderbilt team has opened a season atop the polls when the women's bowling team began their season as the top-ranked team. The No. 1 ranking for the baseball team means for the fourth time in the last five seasons the squad will spend time in the top spot of the polls.

More good projections from Kendall Rogers:

This team is insanely talented. I just hope they don't lose their heads with all the pressure.

Baseball banquet for tomorrow night is sold out.

It was very fun. 1000 people there, twice as many as any previous year. 27 baseball alumni there. Coach Corbin is amazing. He calls up each player to the stage and introduces them and knows everything about them from memory. Where they're from, where they went to high school, their parents and siblings names, what they're studying in school, etc. The whole thing was very well put together.

For those who haven't already seen this posted on Anchor of Gold, D1 Baseball revealed its preseason All-American teams. Vanderbilt accounted for one third of the SEC's fifteen appearances, with three on the first team alone (and was the only team with more than one player on the first team).
Bryan Reynolds made the Second Team OF spot, and Hayden Stone was the RP for the Third Team.

Thoughts on the rotation this weekend with Beuhler out? Fulmer and Ferguson will clearly be the Friday, Saturday guys. As for Sunday, I could see a couple options. We could go with Pfeifer and see how he bounces back from missing last year, or we could do the same thing with Sheffield. Pfeifer has the experience, so I assume we go with him and start Sheffield against Belmont.
Posted on 2/8/15 at 7:12 pm to Athanatos
I agree. I really hope Buehler's injury isn't serious. It would be a nice luxury to have Pfeifer as the weekday starter and Sheffield as a set-up guy for Stone.
