I don't think you're going to do what Louisville, Kansas, North Carolina, or UCLA couldn't do but I can't blame you for supporting your team.

Kentucky fans always travel in droves to Columbia... I assume it's because tickets are easier to get, we're fairly close and it's a nice drive to Columbia through the Appalachians..
I was a sophomore in college and I was at CLA the night Downey and Co. took down #1 Kentucky.. I have trouble deciding between that win and the win over #1 Alabama in football as my greatest memory from undergrad.. They were both great wins.
Anyway, that night we took some Kentucky fans to Five Points and had an amazing time. I always enjoy when the Wildcats come to town... they're a different breed. Love some basketball.

Not to mention, I've been to your coliseum and it seats about 5 million people. What was the thinking behind that.

Meant to hold more people for larger events like concerts/NCAA tourneys/etc. If we could only get the damn confederate flag situation resolved and gone Columbia would have already hosted such things.
i wish we had a smaller arena for sure for bball. It's tough to get real loud when an entire upper bowl in barely full (that's even given the lower bowl is filled to capacity)

You'll get no argument from me.. It's definitely too big.. but like a previous poster just said, it's not just a bball arena. We host concerts, commencement, Ringling Bros. Circus, etc there. I think when we built the CLA, the Univ wanted it as big as possible because we were planning on immediately getting rid of our old Coliseum in favor of academic or residential space.... TEN years later, our old Coliseum is still standing so now we have TWO arenas on campus. We're just now getting around to figuring out what to do with it (future student union).

I don't know. When we built the Coliseum it held 12K and that was considered large for a CBB arena then and we filled it up. We build an 18k one and it has filled up.. problem is we have rarely had any teams worth cheering for since the damn thing was built.
Gamecock fans love basketball, the product has just been really bad more times than not for the past decade, but we can fill an 18k arena. Hell, we had 17k in there for the women's team last week.
With that said, because it was built as a multi-purpose arena it does come off as more an NBA type building rather than a college venue, unlike the Coliseum, which is unfortunate.
FWIW I love the old Coliseum. Went there for a friend's high school graduation a few years back. That is a true CBB venue. I missed it.

I love the Coliseum too! I can only imagine how intimidating it was for opposing teams back in the day... It literally feels like the roman coliseum. It has this dungeon like/claustrophobic quality that had to be hell for ACC teams when it was full...
And 17k for the women the other day was very impressive. A lot of eyes on the SC WBB program right now, recruits etc.. Dawn is building something special. I hope Frank can do the same eventually..

Was coming into this thread to make some snide comment about UK filling 1/2 the season for the game, but with this comment I will stop and just

The real answer to that is that, when we are winning, we are huge basketball fans.
When we were building that place, when the floor area was being dug out, when Mike McGee gave me my Gamecock hardhat, he said it would be a place for us to gravitate to for the next 100 years. It's a palace .. our women lead the nation in attendance. When Martin gets our men on track, we'll pack the place as well.

I was sitting between Eric Hyman and Mrs Dodie ... texting away. Eric told me if I didn't put the Blackberry away he wasn't going to let me sit with him anymore ... and then I showed him that I was texting updates to the SC National Guard in Afghanistan and he said that was okay. Mrs Dodie and I then took a selfie and sent it to ghem, which was rare back then ... and it made her night.

We used to call it "The House that Frank built." (Frank McGuire)
I still remember games in The Longstreet. I remember going to the groundbreaking ceremony for the Carolina Colosseum like it was yesterday ... we parked over at Gibbs Volkswagen and walked over for the ceremony, then went to Varsity Billiards for burgers and fries afterwards and Coach McGuire came in for a beer and to make the rounds celebrating with everyone. One of his ballplayers, Lynn Burkholder was hiding in the back corner drinking beer ... everyone had a big laugh about it.
