I think It still does but the stats that matter have changed a bit. I think things like tackles for loss, sacks, and of course turnovers are more telling stats than total D or even scoring D. I think that's why Bama has struggled recently; not enough negative plays. Spread teams will run inside and throw screens all day successfully. They get in trouble when they lose 5 yds on 1st or 2nd down and have throw down field on 3rd. There are some exceptions, but many spread QB's are glorified RB's who struggle in drop back passing situations.
