I think you need a defense that can generally stop the run (which usually translates to good red zone D) and is good on third down.

Exactly, good defenses beat good offenses. Offenses can no longer line up and go toe to toe with a defense. They have to spread, go quick and throw it around to gain the slightest advantage. Defense has to get off the field and good ones do.
