Sealing the Borders - Football Version - Would it have even mattered?

Got to thinking after the game last night, would it have even mattered if we landed the instate guys? I'm thinking not.
Elliot would barely have seen the ball. We saw it with Josey and we would have seen it with Elliot. GP's featured backs still would have been Hansbrough and Murphy. Absent injuries, Elliot wouldn't have been given the chance despite having the talent.
Would GP ever start a true freshman at tackle if Roderick Johnson had chosen Mizzou? The only time I can remember him starting a true freshman on the line was out of necessity due to injuries once again. Johnson obviously has the talent to do it if he started at tackle for a FSU team that went undefeated in the regular season and made it to the playoffs.
Regardless, I can dream a bit and think about the what if's. What if we sealed the borders and what if they could all play?
LT Roderick Johnson
LG Hall
C Boehm
RG McGovern
RT Morse
QB Mauk
RB Elliott/Hansbrough
WR DGB/White
WR Sasser/Duron Neal
WR Murphy/Hunt
TE Culkin/Reese
To me, that's the offense we needed this year, with the only question mark being Mauk. The line is infinitely better. By adding one guy, you got better at 2 spots on the line by moving Morse over and sitting Chappell. WR all of a sudden has depth. RB is outrageous. I really think just 3 guys(4 if you include DGB not going full on idiot) and we could have been a much different team. And all of those were within Mizzou's grasp.

I believe boehm started as a true freshman......plus the reason GP doesn't start true freshman Olinemen is because the the kids we are getn are not day one ready out of the gate.......GP is doing fine

Boehm was not slated to start as a freshman until injuries decimated our line that year I believe. I think he did earn a spot in the 2 deep, but didn't get bumped until we lost like 5 or 6 linemen. I know it was some ungodly number.
That's my question...if he got one that was day one ready out of the gate, do you think GP would play him?
I'm not criticizing GP. He does what he does and it works more often than not. It just hit me last night that having guys like Elliott and Johnson wouldn't have made a difference because they would have barely seen the field this past season.

Elliot would have played a lot. They wanted to use Murphy in the slot, but really couldn't.
Johnson? Who knows. You are probably right though. GP isn't real fond of starting freshman. DGB didn't even start.

Elliot would have gotten Murphy's # of snaps. Elliot would not carry it 36 times in one game. Not saying it's a bad thing, just a thing.

EE would of played. He was obviously better than any back Mizzou had this season. He is hard to tackle.
GP does have a habit of playing players that don't make mistakes over some higher level athletes. Which is why White started at Saftey for a couple of years.

EE is hard to tackle, correct. Oregon couldn't have talked hitler last night, it was piss poor. Mizzou would, I repeat, would have also beaten the Oregon team we saw last night.

One of the key difference in the running game this year was lack of big plays that came from the RB breaking tackles. Josey did that quite a bit. MM and Mansbro seemed to always be on the verge of a big run only to go down by an arm tackle.

@reedus so we had all of injuries in training camp? I dont believe so.....everyone started getting hurt in the GA game which I was there. Because I know for sure E Boehm started all 12 games and was if I remember correctly was an all American freshman. Point is he came in day one ready & played day one at LG. I believe the best players play no matter if you are a true freshman or not. Dgb didn't start b/c he couldn't learn the play book. FSU LT Johnson didn't start day one at fsu, the original LT moved to center because of an injury which opened the door for johnson. Our linemen that mizzou usually get are barely 275/290 lbs. Can't start day one that little. Sorry for the long post

Not a long post and good point about Johnson getting the chance due to injury. Did not know that. Simply saw his name in the starting lineup for quite some time.
As for Boehm, I'll have to go look it up, but yes, we even had an extraordinary amount of injuries in camp.
I'm not saying this article is right, but our starting line was penciled in to be:
LT Elvis Fisher
LG Travis Ruth
C Mitch Morse
RG Jack Meiners
RT Justin Britt
As I read it, Ruth and Meiners went down preseason, along with backup RT Chappell. So we lost both guards before the first game even. Ruth never returned. Meiners came back for a couple of games later, but mainly at RT because Britt was forced to play LT when Fisher went down against UGA.
Meiners went out for good after a few games and Britt was lost for the season later as well. They shuffled some guys between center and RT but Boehm and Copeland ended up mainstays at the guard spots.
Damn. What a nightmare of a season for the OL. I knew it was bad but re-reading that just makes it seem even worse. So no, not all were in training camp, but enough that we had no choice but to start Boehm and Copeland in fact and then the continued injuries, along with Boehm and Copeland playing well, ensured that they would remain at guard.

Oregon had just clown stomped a team that was thought to be more physical than them...
So I disagree. We have problems vs spread offenses. Chubb ran all over us in a power formation. Ohio State had the better talent and played more physical. Oregon would have Auburn'ed us.

Yea I think the running game pretty much saved the season for us from that side of the ball. Hansbrough may not be Montee Ball or Zeke Elliot but he's a dam good RB, I'm starting to think Jones may be the 2nd best position coach on the staff.

By my count we had big runs against A&M and in the bowl game against Minnesota. We're there others? Can't think of any from the backs.
It's amazing that we averaged over 4 YPC given the lack of explosive plays.
