How....how does this happen?

4 words:

Richmond and Coppin St.

In the '96-97 seasons SC was a combined 47-16. A #3 seed and a #2 seed in back-to-back years. Lost both games in the first round. By 1 point to Richmond and by 13 to Coppin St.

Despite our tournament history we really have had some dominating teams over the years. That '96 team was 15-1 in SEC play. We made the tournament 5 years in a row from 1969-1973 when we were a combined 116-26 with an ACC regular season and ACC tournament title.

Crime of the century? Back in the day only the conference tournament champs made the NCAA tournament. SC was 25-3, 14-0 in ACC play for the 1969-70 season. We won the ACC regular season but lost in the title game of the ACC tournament. Missed the big dance.

Rooster might have more insight but our basketball success and our subsequent butting of heads with the Tobacco Road schools is a big reason we left the ACC.

Very true, also a crime that a team wins four conference titles in five years and isn't allowed to go to three tournaments because of a racist governor and state house. The one team that goes sneaks out of state to play the tourney game in East Lansing, MI. This was in 1963.
