I think with the anonymous internet posting format though that's where the rumor stuff becomes literally impossible to distinguish from trolling or biased attempts to stir something for some reason and the like. You definitely don't have to say "this is what I heard from John P. Smith, assistant athletic director for marketing" or any such stuff. But there's a middle ground there to me that is kinda like the examples I gave above.
In the Quin/Kleiza girlfriend example I didn't name any names just that "a friend of mine said they heard from a person in the AD." That's really broad. Could be anybody. The specific source is nowhere near identifiable, but it gives you all at least some idea where I claim to have gotten it from.
I guess with posts like 808's that's all I'd ask if possible. Anything broad like that that you can share 808 - did you catch these whiffs from within the university, perhaps someone who says the talk to people in the AD, maybe somebody who knows someone at the NCAA, etc. There's ways to pair it down a bit without being so specific that you are anywhere close to outing the exact identity of the source. Again, you certainly don't have to and reedus what you describe is how it mostly goes in practice on the interwebs message boards these days. I'm just saying I'm more likely to put more stock in those sorts of posts where there's some sort of source chain attached, and sometimes posters do provide it.

all I need to hear is "inside source", because that means the person who "let it leak" either knows what's happening or has an ulterior motive.. agenda, one of the two. or you could just be completely making it all up and reposting the tb rumor you claim not to be posting.
doesn't really matter, it will either be true or it won't be, and all this "name names" smaks of a "my sources are better than your sources" type of pissing contest that nobody else really gives 2 shitx about.
remember when Odom was the "name being thrown around" for the job and we had people bent enough to say 'it can't be true if Gabe said it'..
lol, internet rumor mongering is a profession now I suppose, but only the people doing it think it's worthy of any respect.
