It is scary how serious some people take things, but again I think that is more a case of mentally unstable people having greater access to information now and more outlets for the crazy.

There's truth to this, but I'm afraid it's also because many "normal" people have violent thoughts that they keep inside in everyday life interacting in the physical presence of others. When you read some of the incredibly callous, racist, hateful, and/or violent comments by people on message boards in general, it is scary.
