I'm not aware of any "good coaches" who never played the game at all. Perhaps there are some. But they got their start by getting a job as an assistant to someone or some team - doing a miniscule job and working their way up by working under people who could teach them. They didn't just watch a bunch of football and then decide they were ready to coach.
I have heard of decent coaches who never played in college.

I wonder how many people played football just for the 'in' it gives them? I mean, Saban's not built for football, so I've actually theorized that Saban always wanted to be a coach and put his 4'11" arse on the field sheerly so he could get a coach's attention and mentoring.
