on local radio made an interesting comparison.
Nebraska fires Pelini.
His record
9 4
10 4
10 4
9 4
10 4
9 4
9 3
He split bowls 3 3.
His point was that 9 wins in a 13 game season really doesn't mean much anymore. Nebraska got feed up with mediocre seasons, getting consistently beaten by the better teams in conference, and decided to make a move to get to excellence.
Admittedly, there is risk in making change but if you want better than you take the risk.
Then he compared it to UGA which is the mirror image of the Pelini Nebraska era and said what are we waiting for??
Good point I thought.
But here is the rub, Pelini was/is a jerk and Richt is a nice guy.
And that is the difference.
I think he is right.

Part of it is that Richt is a nice guy and Pelini is an arse.
Part of it is that Pelini is coaching in the B1G while Richt is in the SEC (much more difficult).
Can you imagine how pissed our fans would be if we hired Mike Riley to replace Richt? That would create the biggest meltdown the dawgvent has ever seen.

he only beat one ranked team in the past 3 regular seasons and that was #20 Michigan.
Richt beat 7.
Richt beat 7.

Two trips to the Big 12 CG in seven years with no wins ain't gonna endear you to many Nebraska fans. For some reason, they expect to be there habitually.

Ironic you say regular season, because the other ranked team they beat in the non-regular season was....

Well Richt does have 2 SEC titles, 2 BCS bowl wins, 5 SECe titles, and a few national title caliber teams but yeah it's the same

It would deserve its own meltdown board for sure. Planes with "Fire Mike Riley" banners would be flying overhead at his introductory press conference

And then when the news came out that McGarity hired him because he was willing to come for a lower salary than the other candidates, that would be the final straw. The special kool aid would be passed out shortly thereafter.

He didn't even have to play Oklahoma any more...

I can only think of one.

Probably because it's Nebraska. This isn't some nothing program we're talking about here. This is one of the most storied programs in the history of college football, and I commend them for taking a chance and trying to find someone to take the next step. Riley is a good coach but this feels like a very temporary answer. Maybe they want Scott Frost to have a little bit of HC experience before they hire him when Riley retires.
Pelini stabilized their program after Bill Callihan turned it into a dumpster fire, but they began to realize he wasn't going to take that proverbial next step.

Nebraska hasn't been the same since they had Osbourne running a mini-penitentiary over in Lincoln. That combined with a bunch of roided-up corn fed white boys on the OL was their meal ticket.
They started to come back and then this happened:
'Twas the beginning of the end.

Yeah that Colorado game, the subsequent arse beating at the hands of Miami, and the way too hasty firing of Frank Solich (think they'd redo that right now if they could?) are why they are in this position.

Then Miami delivered the death blow

Also, Pelini resembles a turtle while Richt doesn't.....

Nebraska should've never even been playing Miami either. Getting blown out that bad in the last game of the season and not playing in their conference championship game should've kept them out of consideration. I don't care who lost ahead of them, it still didn't make any sense.

agreed....I was just getting into college football at that point but i still knew it was bullshite

Not to be outdone, Oklahoma would lose 35-7 to KSt in the Big XII championship in 03 and STILL be ranked #1 in the computers and play in the NC.
Man, people bitch about SEC teams in the NC but the Big XII really snuck their way in a couple of times.

Oregon should have gotten the bid in 2001, and they proved it by stomping the shite out of Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl that year. Honestly though I don't think it mattered who got sent out to play Miami that year; they were gonna be the sacrificial lamb for the slaughter. Miami was on another planet from the rest of college football in 2001 and would have beaten Oregon, Colorado, Florida, Tennessee all by at least 20.
