That was because, generally, when things were not going well it was because of Frank's micro-managing of coaches. He was constantly trying to run things on the field of play instead of running the business side which is the job of an AD.

The stories of Frank showing up to Nolan's practices and handing him plays to be ran during that season comes to mind...

This is true. I'll never forget how dysfunctional it was. He refused to delegate and let coaches do their job.

Frank did a lot of good things but his micromanaging wasn't one of them.

I yield to no one in my love of Broyles, but hell, he used to watch game film and meticulously comb over the next week's game plan on Sunday nights with Holtz. Orville sort of glosses over it in his book, but it's plain as day in hindsight. And the memos to Hatfield's staff about how "your head coach believes in you more than I do -- prove me wrong" going into the '88 season was pretty uncalled for, and created a toxic environment.

People can say what they want about Long, but he's about as hands off as it gets in terms of oversight of coaches, and it's no wonder why Bielema would rather coach under a guy like Long than a guy like Alvarez.
