That was because, generally, when things were not going well it was because of Frank's micro-managing of coaches. He was constantly trying to run things on the field of play instead of running the business side which is the job of an AD.

The stories of Frank showing up to Nolan's practices and handing him plays to be ran during that season comes to mind...

This is true. I'll never forget how dysfunctional it was. He refused to delegate and let coaches do their job.

Frank did a lot of good things but his micromanaging wasn't one of them.
