Because Kenny Rogers did not represent State, was not associated with the Bulldog Club nor did he have anything to do with the university until he thought he could possibly broker a deal with the university. He knew State was recruiting kNewton and he contacted his dad and his dad wanted money for his son's signature. He said he would act as the go between for a cut of the money. When kNewton took his official visit to State Cecil and sCam arranged to talk to Mullen after the game that sCam attended. They met at the Hilton Garden Inn in Starkville and at this point Rogers arrived and Cecil informed Mullen that his son's signature would not be free this time. Mullen said he does not buy players and that was the end of the meeting. The school was found to have done nothing wrong. They gladly accepted the recommendation to bar Rogers from any future interactions with the athletic department since he never had anything to do with State to begin with.

And our AD said that we turned this over to the SEC before sCam signed with Auburn. At the time the plan was to sit him for one year as his eligibility would have been in question. The one year would have cleared him for play and he would have led the 2011 squad.

What would be interesting is how kNewton's dad's church got that massive influx of donations after sCam signed with Auburn. Iirc, the city had condemned the church as it was such danger to enter and couldn't meet fire codes. Then all of the sudden the parishioners raised several hundred thousand bucks to renovate it.
