I'll never forget that weekend in general. There were more people in Tuscaloosa that Saturday than any college game I've ever been to. I had friends from schools like UGA and Ole Miss asking for a crash spot, just so they could be in town for the atmosphere.
The tailgating, the bar scene, it was so much different than any other game day weekend I've experienced, and have yet to experience again. Everyone knew what that game meant; it was a ticket to the national title game. There was no doubt that Alabama and LSU were the two best schools in the country. That game featured big plays, great players, and a fantastic atmosphere.
I will always respect Les Miles for being a stand-up guy and saying "I would be honored to play that team again."
Though it may ring hollow on the heels of 21-0 several years later, the sheer fact of the matter is, Alabama & LSU were the clear #1 & #2 teams in the country that year. And on that cold November night, it showed.
