sort of serious question re: officials

Have they always been so bad and no one noticed in the pre-HD days, or do they seem to be much less competent these days?
I just feel that a lot of the crap they miss is because they have become way too dependent on replay working things out. I also feel that the yearly rule changes based on which way the political winds are blowing aren't helping them out either.
Still, how does a ref crew NOT notice two players with the same jersey number on the field at the same time? That is basic.
Just look at the PSU-OSU game last night regarding an "INT" that was obviously not and a FG allowed to let stand even though it was obviously kicked SECONDS after the play clock expired.

I recall them becoming pretty shitty starting around 2009.
tSEC has got to get this shite together. Our officials are the worst.

When Bama started to be good again, the refs shittyness got bigger. You draw the correlation...

I still don't understand how they didn't notice the 2 numbers situation.

It also seems to me the PI calls have been horrid this year for every team

No. We had a few bad ones years ago and those refs were known by name by a lot of fans - it was an individual "John Doe is a lousy ref" sorta thing instead of an across the board issue. However, overall the officiating used to be wayyyyyy better. It has been utterly incompetent the past few years and I really don't know why.

Why would you mention jersey numbers as an example when there were much more worse official errors made in that game? Troll?

Because that is a legit example of officiating incompetency..which was the whole point of the thread.

Because that is not a judgment call and it did not happen in the heat of action. It is a basic rule of football that one of the refs should have caught when they are counting guys on the field.

It made no difference in outcome of game while other calls had potential to be more decisive.

Likely, but considering it ENDED the game, then yeah that non-call definitely played an outcome in the game.

Oh I agree. I just can't believe college officials of any division would miss that. That's basic peewee stuff

I don't think the officiating has gotten any worse or any better in the last 20 or 30 years. I think with all the games on TV and all the replays, mistakes just become more apparent.
I do think the current replay rules, does cause some hesitation in making calls with the officials, which is probably not a good thing.

It should have been called but it made no difference in the outcome of the game. This is like saying team A got screwed because the ref didn't notice the color of socks team Bs player had on.
