I think it is the media more than the fanbase. The media (who hasnt picked the conference winner correctly since the 1990's)
picked Bama to win the SEC and have a much louder voice than the fanbase.
That is where the unrealistically high expectations comes from that the team hears about, on sportscenter, not the Bud light drankin TV fan.

A bama beat writer was on one of the sports talk shows yesterday & commented that while he agreed with Saban re his comments about too high expectations, he added that that attitude has always been around, & will always be around, bama's football program, i.e. point being, if he's frustrated now, he's in for a bigger melt down sooner rather than later as those expectations will never go away. My take is that every team in college football goes through various cycles, and what bama is experiencing now is tied to the huge upgrade in the competition within the division itself as much as anything else. The West has never been this strong.
