We see how tentative and hesitant Marshall is on his runs, it's going to be the same deal for these guys coming up. Everyone is asking when they're going to be back but they aren't going to be in game shape and they're going to be rusty for a long time. We may have already lost the crucial game before these guys are back in playing shape, so I think we need to get McKenzie, Williams and Tibbs all the reps we can this weekend. One of those guys has to step up.

I'm swearing off Rumph at the moment, but I could foresee him having a monster game at the right moment for Auburn or something. We need to focus on the guys we have and make sure to get them the reps we need.

I think Tony Ball needs to let these guys loose, if we have an athlete that can catch and run, then we need to put them out there. i think too often ball makes these guys tentative with the perfection he demands. frick route running, if we have a guy who can go out there and be a gamer, we need them to step up.

Gurley hasn't caught much this year. I think he might even be negative.

He was the #3 receiver last year.

I was hoping for 1000/1000 season from him this year.

We have those athletes. The problem is that our guys are going up against just as good, if not better athletes in our opponents DBs. You've got to know how to run a good route, how to throw a block downfield, and how to time your route with your QB to turn on the jets at at the exact moment so that the DB can't pick up on where the pass is going and when. Only guys like AJ Green get to bypass some of those pre reqs and that's because AJ was and is a flat out better athlete than most of the human beings on earth. He could finesse you to death with natural ability. Mitchell is much the same way when healthy. The rest of the receivers aren't. Guys like Bennett and Conley, though, are very intelligent, fearless, and do all the technical stuff well so they make up for those relative deficits. If a receiver isn't out there, it's because he either isn't a good enough athlete to beat a similarly athletic DB in practice on talent alone and because he hasn't proven he has an edge over that DB in intelligence and technique. Furthermore, you can't just stick a receiver out there in a game situation if you're not sure he can do it just yet. So much of Receiving is dependent on precision timing and not giving away the play or ball location to the DB. An inexperienced or underprepared receiver is going to give that pertinent info away to a good SEC DB and get the ball picked.

We often seem to have too many highly rated yet unproductive players on our roster. This gets back to my mantra that our cumulative top 10 recruiting rankings belie the fact that we aren't fielding a top 10 team. Any one of these players could have made the difference in the SC game.....

I understand your passion but there's a reason why WRs need to run good, crips routes.

It's important that the WRs are predictable so that the QB knows where and when to throw the ball.

Also, a clean route minimizes the ability of the defenders to actually defend the ball while maximizing the success of the throw (assuming the ball is placed where it needs to be).

"Ballers" and "gamers" are good, but they still need to have good technique and run good routes. Not doing so will result is more busted plays, more confusion and bad decisions for the QB, and potentially greater likelihood that the defense will successfully stop the play (or even create a TO).

Obviously I know Keith Marshall is injured again, but not serious. I wonder if they ever approached him about filling in at slot receiver for a few plays. With our logjam at running back, his lack of ability to break tackles, and our injuries at ride receiver, it might be an idea?
