Right. I think the only way it happens is if you have scenario like last year, an 11-1 top 5 team whose only loss it to the team that wins the division.

I don't think it will happen with a committee unless they feel the other conferences shite the bed. It doesn't seem impossible though when you take the highest ranked SEC team that was not champion.
2013 Alabama- was 11-1 behind Florida State and Auburn. Won 3/4 and 2 straight. People wouldn't like it but it would have been a likely selection for #3 or #4.
2012 Florida- was 11-1 behind Alabama and Notre Dame. They played the toughest schedule in college football of any contending team. Defeated ACC champ and #4 behind them also did win their conference/division (Oregon)
2011 Alabama- was 11-1 behind LSU. OSU could be placed ahead for the sake of argument but Bama still could/would be #3 or #4.
2009 Florida- was 12-1 but fell to 5th in both polls after an SECCG loss. They were defending champ and winners of 2/3 going for 3/4. They would have to be passed over for the Mountain West champ TCU or WAC champ Boise State.
2008 Alabama and Texas. Bama was 12-1 while Texas was 11-1. Mountain West champ Utah was unbeaten but a 4 team playoff almost has to take 1 of Bama or Texas.
2007 Georgia- was 10-2 but that year was insane. After #1 and #2 you could have picked any 2 of the next 5 or 6 teams that how much of a bloodbath it was.
That is just the last few years.
They don't want to chose 2 teams from the same conference but some years they may feel like it's necessary.
