Serious question -- is working out not a mandatory thing in the military?

Seems like I see a lot who aren't in shape, not even decent shape.

There are many who find ways to circumvent the PT regimens. Some eventually get kicked out, but way too many stick around, especially the ones who have been in for awhile that the military is loathe to cut for fear of losing their expertise in their fields. It's a very sad state of affairs for some, no doubt about it.

There's also (predictably) a sizable "jock" portion of the military that's always in the gym. I fall somewhere in between. I work out 5 days a week at least, but I'm not trying for "gainz" or pounding pre-workouts like a lot of folks.

Working out is fun and feels good and keeps me from looking like a beached whale

Some of those 300 pound guys can still meet all the physical requirements. We had one guy that ran the mile an a half in 10 1/2 minutes.

But then there were broke dicks who scammed.

Then there are personnel who don't receive the required medical attention. Making it impossible to train.

There is also the proud 3 miles a year crowd. The ones who hate running and whole goal is to meet the minimum time and only run for the two test a year.
