I have worked with people facing significant grief issues my whole career. There is a place between stuck with sadness/guilt/anger and completely getting over the biggest losses of our life. One never completely "gets over" the biggest losses of their life, but one doesn't have to live their whole life stuck either. I believe that Gaines is stuck in the grief process. What is so sad is that he could have relief and still honor his comrade.
