I think many "smart" people, don't research the fields they want to go into or the job outlook, before taking the path towards it. I wonder why educated people don't have the foresight to plan their future out sometimes. Also, this has nothing to do with 38 year old adults complaining about not making $15 an hour at Burger King.

What role does our centralized food system play in this?

Beats me. What role does it have on people with little to no job skills trying to perform a job?

Why does the average meal travel over 1,000 miles before it's eaten?

For who? Some people mainly buy local now a days. Some, like myself grow much of what they eat. Why generalize and again, what's it got to do with a high school dropout not making $15 bucks an hour to flip a burger or drop French fries into a deep fryer?

Why are we dealing with such a high percentage of service industry jobs in comparison to production jobs?

Ahh.. something I can get into. DEMOCRATS, ENTITLEMENTS AND LABOR UNIONS! There ya go. Your socialism and communism leaning policies led to the destruction and fleeing of manufacturing jobs and has helped turn this country into one of service oriented and not one of production. Thanks Obama. And Clinton and Carter and FDR...

Capitalism rewards the smart, hard worker. The way it should.

FDR - the father of American socialism and the executioner of Libertarianism, upon which our country was formed.

It also rewards those lucky enough to come out of the right vagina. While I do think capitalism to be the best rationing system we've come up with (price system and market economies at least) but let's not act like there are equal outcomes for equal intelligence and effort.

For the fast food workers, you're seeing the result of the weak labor market play out. They are working and trying to cut out a living. They're at least putting in the effort. No need to demonize them.

They should try to collectively bargain and see where they get. If others are willing to come in and undercut the union negotiated wages, well that's their problem. They have every right to demand more pay though, no matter how much anyone thinks they "deserve". The system is how much you can get, not what you deserve to get.

Do these 'smart' people know where to place commas?

For a one track thinker, maybe not. But upon further thought it most certainly does -- the statement 'go make a better life for yourself' is unfair when we consider that many people who are highly educated are working in the service industry.

'Average' was a key word in the sentence you quoted. The average meal eaten by an American travels a frightening distance before it's consumed -- thanks to a centralized power structure in the food industry.

It's astonishing that someone can be this lost.

As it does, in many ways. But at what cost? At the cost of stripping a country of its human and natural resources all because there was a smart guy on another continent that saw a way to exploit these resources with no concern for anything but his own immediate future?
