What is it with everyone looking backward? Last year's performances have zero bearing on this year's results.

Because at the time being the only justification you have is you beating South Carolina. Florida and Tennessee improved and they were better than arky last year. Mizzou dropped off but they're still better. USC would probably beat them too.
All we have seen from them this year is hanging with Auburn for a half until they let their thug qb back in the game.
