Things that were different in 2014 opener from 2013 opener and general thoughts

I was disappointed coming off both of these for vastly different reasons.
Last year, I was expecting (and most of us) us to come out looking dominant, like the best team in the nation as we did against Michigan the year before. That didn't happen. Aside from Christian Jones on special teams, we were very uninspired, lethargic, and just generally did not have that Bama mentality. That was the most disappointing thing, and it was too late to instill that mentality back in the team and we all know how that season ended.
This year, we are just not as talented RIGHT NOW in the critical positions, however, we have the ability to grow week to week. We had key guys out and looked lost in some areas, but you can tell this team is determined to work hard and that goes a long way. It does not make us a championship team in and of itself, but it is a huge plus that we can at least know we are headed in the right direction for this year and 2015. If Coker does not come around this year (which was unreasonable to expect), he gets a whole offseason to learn the Bama QB mentality. Im not going to expect this team to take us to a championship right now because that would be setting myself up for disappointment, but at least we know that we can improve week to week.
Oh and I was happy with Kiffin's first game as our OC, but we need to run the ball more.
Roll Tide.

It looks like that's what we are going for. To be fair, I guess this should have always been thought of as a rebuilding year.

We came out flat and unimpressive against VTech last year and still came very close to a perfect 12-0 season.
No matter how bad some things looked against WVU, ^ that is something to keep in mind

I don't think we looked flat in this game though. I think the gameplan was solid and we could have easily won by another 2-3 touchdowns with less mistakes (not giving up a special teams td would have given us one). Hopefully those mistakes get cleaned up in the next few weeks though.

This ^^^
I've heard (Brando) several times that Bama won despite a poor performance. All I hear is about how poor we played and how WV could've won the game if not for a bunch of mistakes. No one says the opposite. If not for mistakes Bama would've blown them out.
Since when is 528+yards a poor performance?
1Td given up by the D. Sure they got a lot of yards but that was due to our scheme of a bend but not break style for this game. Played it really safe to try to to prevent long plays and wv took what we gave them. Why did we play that style, first game with a lot of new faces in the secondary? The answer is the question, to protect our new guys.
This team is fricking stacked with playmakers on offense. I thought Sims played very well for his first start. He will get better. I would like to see what the other QBs can do, not just Coker. I want to see Bateman and Cornwell play. They have talent and we're higher rated than Coker, they are our future I'd rather one of those guys win it than Coker, I don't like the idea of having a new Qb three years in a row.
Sims this year, them Coker next year and then a different one the following. We need to find a Qb that can be the guy for multiple years. If we want to consistently be in the hunt for a championship. Too much talent at all the other positions to be wasted by having a new unproven Qb each year.

WVU only had 28 yards on the ground.
Usually, when a team has those kinds of numbers, it means they got behind early and were forced to throw the ball. That was not the case Saturday.
Other than some good runs on the initial drive, they couldn't do much of anything running the ball, though admittedly they didn't try too much.

I think the first game being as close as it was is good for this team. It shows the players they have a LONG way to go if they want to make it to the playoff. Good to get a reality check early to keep them hungry.
