Rogers Redding made a mistake by going public with this issue. If it looks like the refs are trying to slow things down this year, he will be without a job and officals will be under a stronger microscope. Before it is over, the max age of an Official will be under 35 years old.
What if it looks like refs are running at breakneck speed to get the ball set so that the players and sideline coaches will stop screaming and yelling at them to hurry up? Will he keep his job?

My question is this: Shouldn't it be like this all the time, whether the offense is in hurry-up mode or not? Since they instituted a 40-second clock, then the refs should be trying to let whoever is on offense take full advantage of those 40 seconds on every play.

Officals were not running at breakneck speed until after the play was dead and the ball marked. During a normal play, they run toward the huddle (5-10 yrds on average). Where the sense of urgency came into play was after the ball was blown dead. Officials were not getting back in position because they were use to taking 10-20 secs to do so in the past. The officals will be watched closely from both sides this year.
