If what you say about Slive and Skipper is true, then I will have to concede that the sec getting Virginia and UNC is not going to happen.
It is more that just Skipper and Slive. Go back to the history of 3 conferences.
Western, became the B1G - and Nebraska tried for 100 years or so before they finally got in
Pacific Coast, became the PAC after massive cheating in the 1950's shut down the original PCC.
SIAA, mother to the SEC, ACC, and SWC schools. TAMU was in the old SIAA so 100 years later they rejoined the offshoot SEC. The bulk of the SIAA was split by the Appalachian Mountains (and difficult travel back then) so the SEC became the west and the ACC became the east.
Most all movement by schools over the past century is probably greatly impacted by early membership or proximity to one of these 3 conferences.

Fortunately, the ACC has solidified. UNC and UVA each offer 28 NCAA sports; thus many sports would have no where to go if there was a move to the SEC. UNC probably has a closer connection to UVA than Duke.
After Maryland left, I approached a good friend of mine who is on the UNC Board of Trustees to ask him if UNC might consider joining the SEC if the ACC collapsed. He looked at me as if I had a third eye, stating UNC would NEVER join the SEC. If the conference collapsed we would join the BIG. Sigh.
