This happened on a turn and these cars are designed to drift through turns. Meaning you enter the turn by initially making a quick hard left jerk of the wheel, and then gunning the gas, this sends the back end in to a semi-lateral drift. If you kept the steering wheel cranked left at this point, you would do a super tight donut with the rear end drifting through the whole spin.

But in this case, as soon as the rear end goes in to the lateral drift, the driver turns the wheel right and the entire car then drifts through the turn with the angle of the turn. Slight adjustments harder right and more gas can make you go high through the turn and slight adjustments of softer right and less gas can pull you down lower in the turn.

If Ward was standing directly in front of Tony's path while he was in a lateral drift, the only option is for Tony to straighten out the wheel and gun it to try and pull the rear end out of the drift. This is the part of the video we don't quite see.

From what it looks like to me, is Tony was trying to release from the drift and go to the left of Ward, but Ward was too close and the rear wheel struck him. And this made the car veer right afterwards.

It's just not reasonable to say he turned in to the kid when the front of the car is not what struck him. These cars are designed to drift. If you turn left, the back end drifts right. If you turn right, the back end drifts left. And especially if you're in the middle of a drift, you can't just stop on a dime and pop out of it instantly going straight.

The car before Stewart turned left and avoided the kid easily.......and WITHOUT accelerating.

Watch the video.

I'm assuming since they were under caution & supposedly running at caution speeds, no drifting, etc. was going on....
