There was a similar case in Kentucky a couple of years ago. A man went in for a circumcision and the doctor amputated his penis.
Apparently the patient had signed papers that said the doctor could remove any cancer he might discover without consultation. The man sued the doctor but lost on the grounds that he had given the doctor permission to do the radical procedure.

As bad as that is, I'm pretty sure it pales in comparison to the visit of a man who is told he has pancreatic cancer and that the five year survival rate is essentially nil.
