No. A lot of people really shite on it, calling it the "armpit of the south," but I don't think it's as bad as all that. But, it's not great. That's not to say you won't have a great time, because you will.

That's all I hear said about Columbia when I'm in Charleston. I love uninformed people.

We're the true capital of the South, historically, since about midway through the war of northern aggression. We didn't surrender ... the bastard Sherman burned us out.

I've always heard the "armpit" term referring to B-ham and Tallahassee.

Listen, we've all got our warts. Raleigh-Durham is a total dump IMHO. Knoxville ain't no Shangra La. Gainesville has its issues as does Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, etc.

Columbia, SC has garnered its fair share of All-American City awards over the years. We get compared to Charleston a lot but that's not really fair considering Charleston is always listed as one of the nicest places to live in the U.S. yetno one ever mentions North Charleston in the same sentence.
