I think the difference in respect that Saban gets vs. Calipari is interesting.
Saban has won a lot more than Calipari, hasn't had 2 of the best 4 seasons of his career vacated, and doesn't win almost exclusively on the backs of one and done freshmen. They are actually very different.

spurrier had plenty of talent after his 3rd year at florida ... he had plenty of recruits at his disposal and managed to win 1 title while playing in only 1 other title game (in which he got waxed) ... he had plenty of talent at uf and lost 9 games his last 3 years ...
he's pathetic at this point ...

Some of you people have lost your mind. Saban is a defensive coach turned head coach. He is considered by people a lot more knowledgeable than any of us as a great defensive coach from a schematic standpoint, teaching/development standpoint, game plan standpoint - basically any measure. His defenses are almost ALWAYS at the top of college football.
In addition to being a great defensive coach he is undoubtedly a great HEAD coach. Head coaches are measured by the bottom line - winning. Saban wins more than anyone in this period of college football. He does it with recruiting, with player development through a great overall program, with teaching schemes and execution at an extremely high level (particularly on the defensive side of the ball which is where is x and o expertise lies) and with good game plans.
This thread is funny.

oh, he's still a very good coach, but his constant digs at a superior coach with a better record are the pathetic part ...

Seriously! He needs to learn to put teams away. OM, UGA, and FSU should have been blow out wins.

Thats BS. Saban is a great coach. A bit too intense sometimes, but his way works at Alabama.
Spurrier has had his run and is into extra innings baseball in my opinion. Whatever he does at this stage is gravy.
I love SOS because i think he is hilarious. I also think he is one of the most insecure human beings on the planet.

I can't for the life of me understand why Steve is acting out like a child regarding Saban/Bama.
His little quips are pety and knit-picky. SOS has done a fantastic job at USCe everyone recognizes his accomplishments. Is Steve pissed that he's not the Bama coach? That he doesn't have 4 titles? That he can't haul in a top recruiting class year after year and doesn't understand how Saban continues to collect top talent and actually get them ON CAMPUS?

Saban is a great coach. Now hold on Gumps, he may even be better than Bear, and that is saying something.
Since Saban's hoarding talent has become a topic, consider this. He is operating under an 85-player rule just like everyone else.
Bear operated under the 120-player and up rule. In short, there were no restrictions.
The Bama mystique helps, to be sure, and Saban will lie, like most coaches.
He tried his dead level best to steal the three Rock Hill, S.C., stars away from Spurrier. I know for a fact that he promised to change his scheme for Clowny and promised Stephon Gilmore anything he wanted. Holloman was a Carolina lock from day 1.
But that just makes him like a lot of others.
He is a great coach in that he has taken the Big-10 mentality, souped it and uses it a Bama.
Let's remember the mystique was at Tuscaloosa during the Perkins,Curry, Stallings, Dubose, Franchione, Shula eras. Only Stallings proved to be a good game day coach, by Bama standards.
To me, there is no reason to suggest he isn't a great coach. Because he is.

BCS football is much more subjective than a tournament. Calipari has been to title games at UMASS, MEMPHIS, and UK. I would think in a sport where your best players are taken away as freshman, especially at the rate it happens to at UK, one could argue Calipari is actually doing a much better job coaching/developing in his time given than Saban.
Saban/Calipari: all about recruiting, defense, and Simple offense designed to out athlete other teams. Both are yankees, and opposing fanbases love to hate them.

He's 4-3 vs Saban head to head. So pathetic he is not. He just doesn't put in the effort on the recruiting trail like Saban does.
He simply likes to stir the pot.

I'm giving him a pass for 2013 due to it being his 1st year as a BCS coach. However, he has to learn play 4 quarters on offense, defense, and special teams. I think he'll put his trust in his DC but he needs to recognize when to step in and make adjustments as the HC
Gus' defenses will never be statistically elite because of the style of offense he runs. Just like how Saban's offense will never be statistically elite because of the defense he runs. Malzahn's D needs to be just good enough to make big stops when he needs them and get his offense back on the field. Saban's offense needs to be just good enough to put a few points on the board, control the clock, and keep his defense off the field and out of bad field position situations.

Because South Carolina = Alabama

He did beat BCS championship bound #1 Ohio State in 1998 and another BCS bound 2001 Tennessee in SECCG while fielding vastly inferior talent.

I just can't understand why all of the sudden Steve has a bee in his bonnet and feels the need to take sling shite at Saban/Bama?

People have always said that Spurrier cares more about winning conference titles than he does national titles. If he wins the SEC at USCe, I think he retires afterward

Or maybe Saban is considered the best coach in America and that's why he gets brought up a lot?
You guys take everything Spurrier says that's not "OMG HES THE BEST EVER" as some huge insult to Bama or Saban.
Saban and Bama are the best thing in college football a lot, so they will get referenced a lot. Take it as a compliment.

Source?? Because Clowney was quoted saying that he would have committed to Alabama "a long time ago, if they ran a 4-3 defense", instead of a 3-4..

lol ... they're both great coaches ... 4-3 is not some overwhelming domination ... saban doesn't need to stir the pot and remind stevie he's been to only 2 title games and got waxed in one of them while recruiting in a very fertile ground for football players ... saban doesn't need to remind spurrier he lost to a dismal tennessee team last year ...
