It's not the base defense that helps Chavis with the HUNH. In the Chip Kelly era the toughest defenses we faced were Cal's and Stanford's 3–4. Schematically the 3–4 will put more help on the edge.
The problem Saban has is his need for multiple personnel groupings. Chavis can run multiple sets with the same personnel. Also, the DL isn't the problem for Saban against the HUNH. It's the huge OLBs he needs to run his multiples. A 265 pound OLB is a problem in space.
