I think its because Alabama claims championships in years they lost their bowl games. ie, how can you claim to be the champs when you lose your bowl game?
in before thats the way it was done therefore legit.

The losing in your bowl game argument against Alabama works well for the 1973 UPI title claim as there was already a precedent set with the AP poll in the mid 60s to wait until after the bowls to crown a championship. The argument isn't as effective against the 1964 title claim because the rule hadn't been changed yet. It would be like arguing that FSU's 2013 national title isn't really a title because they didn't win a 4 team playoff to win it. Come to think of it, that will probably be the next way Auburn fans try to convince themselves that Alabama doesn't deserve the 2009, 2011, and 2012 national titles.
Alabama should drop the 1941 claim and replace it with 1945 and 1977. Alabama dominated it's 1945 schedule going undefeated and blowing out USC 34-14 in the Rose Bowl. Alabama's 1977 season was almost identical to Auburn's 1983 season.

The same way you can claim one when you didn't play in a bowl game. By your logic Bama have been more legit if they had been on probation so they didn't have to play in those bowl games.
