With the present day expanded fields in both baseball and basketball, this is a moot question. Regular season champs get in on "body of work" regardless of conference tournament outcome. These conference tournaments DO give lesser teams the chance to get in and makes for an exciting finish and factors in to seedings. And of course there's the money grab, for basketball, anyway.
