I understand you can't compare positions that easily, but the biggest difference is the impact that an offensive player can make compared to one defensive player. One defensive player cannot win you games, or carry you to national championships. The best offensive players can. I definitely think Thomas is a top 3 defensive player in the SEC all time, but to say he is the greatest overall player is a little ridiculous to me.

A RB has to rely on other players (offensive linemen) to do great things. But I agree Hershel was a beast.

However Derrick Thomas did win games at Bama almost single handedly. In 1988 he had 9 Qb hurries, 3 sacks and a safety against penn st in a game alabama won 8-3
