Wichita State would only play teams that would do 1 for 1 home and homes according to Steve Forbes (assistant at Wichita now who was at Tennessee under Pearl). He appeared regularly on Knoxville radio this year and said Tennessee and Bama were the only P6 schools (who they deemed would be good RPI games) who would come to Wichita. He said a lot of schools wanted 2 for 1s.

It wasn't Pastner, although he still won't schedule us. It was Cal who said they would never play Arkansas because it would allow us back into Memphis to recruit.
I find this hard to believe because Cal rarely recruited players from Memphis. Too many distractions.

It doesn't change the fact that they're a top 5 program right now.
Right now is the key word, there have been other programs who have done similar to Florida under Donovan, some you may remember, some you may not.
It takes more than a good run to be a blue blood.

But Florida isn't a blublood program, and, really not even close.
They do have two titles, yes. They don't have all the wins and decades of winning like Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina, etc.
If we are talking about new entries into blue blood territory, it's UConn IMO.

It's a damn fact. Cal was afraid to play Arkansas when he was at Memphis.

Doesn't hurt that they get to play in one of nicest arena's in the NBA.
No doubt. It's insane the NCAA tells us that the rock (a natural rock native to campus which has zip to do with sports and has served as a student message board for well over 50 years and only occasionally mentions sports at all) is an unfair recruiting advantage (imho, if it were challenged the NCAA would lose as it would fall under several free speech cases/rulings by SCOTUS) but says nothing about Memphis regularly playing on a NBA court - not occasionally but regularly! You can't tell me that's not a BIG recruiting advantage. Yet UT paints over that rock because any time students happen to mention sports when recruits are on campus because of the NCAA. WTF.

This made me think of some of the big name kids from here and your point is actually pretty damn true. Stokes was at the same private school I went to before he blew up as a basketball player.
When I was playing the big matchup was Leslie McDonald (UNC) vs. Elliot Williams (Duke) & Laurance Bowers (Mizzou). All private school kids, which made Nichols' decision all the more surprising.
Was Nichols a scholarship kid or did his parents pay for him to attend?
The boom of private schools in Memphis and Nashville to keep rich kids away from all the poors baffles me but the gap between rich and poor here isn't nearly as wide either and we're less classist in general, imo. We don't have blue blood societies going back ages whereas Nashville and Memphis have had them since the 1800s for both white blue bloods and black blue bloods. I guess we've always been too poor for that.
At the same time, our lack of private schools has held back developing big pools of basketball and football talent like Middle and West, TN have even though as a division East, TN has the population to support them especially since most of the pop no longer lives in the boondocks and is quite near the bigger cities and def close enough to support several districts playing one another and raising the overall talent but you know how TN is - we hate spending $ on anything and without an income tax I don't see how E. TN can get to where it should be.

I know we played a home and home with UNLV back when they were the WSU of today (but with way more talent).
I'm sure some schools may have wanted a 2 for 1, but it is a convenient excuse to dodge schools if wanted similar to the Boise's "anywhere, anytime" motto that was only true if it was on their terms.

That is just Cal. The reason Kentucky isn't playing Indiana any more is because Crean wanted it to be a home and home and Cal wanted it to become a neutral site game. It isn't to keep Indiana from stealing recruits out of Kentucky.
If that logic made any sense then Kentucky would still be playing a home and home with Indiana because that state pumps out basketball players at a higher level than majority of the country.

Yeah, he was in the media back then about how the series hurt Memphis by allowing Arkansas to play in Memphis.
Then some bullshite about owed football games came up and the series was cancelled.

And some blue bloods suck arse now. Georgetown, North Carolina, Arkansas (I'm feeling charitable), heck throw in Okie Lite. They'd all give their eye teeth to have UFs current basketball program.
Some teams that were good never became good again. There's nothing but subjectivity in your assessment and it serves no purpose other than trivia. It doesn't predict future success and has almost zero impact on revenue.

Florida sucked before Donovan, now it's blueblood. Pretty similar situation for the bluest of blues, Duke.
The past is not the determination of the future, a good hire will make good things happen. frick, Florida sucked in everything before 1990 and they're now awesome in both major sports.
Man, this is like 3 points in a single thread where you and I seem to agree. Is the weather forecast for hell predicting winter tomorrow?
While I may not go as far as calling Florida or Uconn blueblood's they have shown that new schools can replace the old ones. The bigger point is the schools spending big dough on coaches sure seem to be getting to Final Fours and winning National Championships. The other point is the ACC got 6 teams in the NCAA and got at least 18 million for doing so. If the SEC just gets 3 teams in, they are not pulling done the NCAA dough in basketball.
In simple terms :
NCAA pays in basketball
NCAA does not pay in football

He ended our series in 2003. You can do a quick google search for Pastner doing the same thing as Cal.
