The rightmost column keeps eyes to the front, to keep everything going in the same direction. That's not an A&M thing, that's how it is done. You got me on the sunglasses. Not sure how he/we got away with that or why I didn't notice it before. Probably some BS excused prescription thing.
ETA: And it occurred to me your "random" might mean the seniors (and only the seniors) saluting. That is an A&M thing. But it ain't random.

Most likely. Although my outfit did have a blind cadet who was allowed to wear shades if he so chose during march-ins.
Rest of us waited to don them until after the march-in.

Yes, I was well aware of how it's supposed to be done, which is why it seemed weird.
The seniors saluting was what I was looking for. Makes sense now, still weird, but I see why.
