You can do that in Missouri and north Arkansas, but a rye lawn in Birmingham sounds like a bad idea. It's more common to do a Bermuda or zoysia lawn and just let it go dormant during the cold season so you don't have to mow during the winter.

Ya'll are all talking about planting seeds. If the OP doesn't have a budget cap, why not buy some the best sod and have it rolled out or laid down?

What climate is B'ham? I'm only familiar with coastal climate grass.
