No thanks. We prefer to let the other school in the state claim phantom championships...

Basically the further back you go, the more murkey the concept of a 'national champion' becomes.

It really wasn't until the 60's that the AP and Coaches' polls became the accepted defacto national title awarders.

And the REALLY old shite (pre 1936) is even more ambiguous. Most years you have multiple schools claiming on some basis, and it's hard to argue with them if they're undefeated that year.

Long story short, don't worry about what indvidual schools claim and just look at what the general consenus says.

The mainstream media these days only recognizes AP and Coaches Poll titles anyway. It's not perfect but it's a hell of a lot better than everybody claiming everything.
