When do History majors get to unionize

Look for this to get struck down by an appellate court, then struck down at the Supreme Court. This isn't over.

Exactly. This is a huge legal can of worms that I can't even imagine actually happening. Besides, Northwestern President announced he'll drop the football program if they unionize.

I agree. It's just ridiculous. All of this.

Who came up with this idea to begin with?

So far this is only for Private Schools. State Schools aren't in this ruling.

Probably Pat Fitzgerald. It wasn't one of the athletes, I don't think.
What's going to happen is one school, maybe Northwestern, maybe someone else (better not be Penn State or Alabama) will try this and not be able to afford it and the entire athletics program will be sacrificed as a result and that will end this fad before it gets going.

Jeebus, but like some including you have said, this won't stand in the courts.

If the players unionize and are considered payed employees, does that not violate thier amateur status?
Posted on 3/26/14 at 2:58 pm to parkjas2001
Yeah
The catch-22 is that they can unionize if they want, but they can't play if they unionize.

The Northwestern players are getting some bad advice. If they succeed, their university will have to drop football, and the players will be fricked.

They are amateurs in the eyes of the NCAA...what if they broke away from the NCAA?

That would require the schools themselves to break away.
This goes way beyond football, too. If you start paying football players, you have to start paying everyone. Entire athletic programs would fold.

One day we'll look back on this decision and label it the beginning of the end of college football. It's either going to go completely in the tank or turn into a minor league farm for the NFL. Both will result in shitty football compared to what we have today.
