Yes they were the state's version of an A&M school, not sure if they officially had that name at the beginning or not.

Actually used to have cadets as well.

this is very traditional in the south. Almost all states had colleges with a goal of training the militia's officer corps. I'm a little surprised Clemson did just bc I know that's the mission of The Citadel but I suppose some of the older states had multiples (VMI, VaTech, GMI, and I think UGA too).
