Here is the likely reason you had a 3.5 foot snake in your back yard. You may have roof rats and not even know it but a snake certainly would.
I wish people had as visceral a reaction to rats as they do to snakes. Rats will attack sleeping babies, they carry disease and they destroy property. Snakes are one of our allies in keeping them under control. I hope you'll consider that the next time you encounter one.

Snakes control rodents who carry things such as plague
Spiders control insects who carry things such as malaria
If you grew up on the land you know who is your ally and who is not. City folks are such pussies when it comes to spiders and snakes and have no appreciation of their watchdog status for humans.

Did you not read where I said that joking aside, I tried to scare him off and he didnt budge, and did not want my kids messing with it or are you to concerned with making sure I felt bad?
