Are you saying with 100% certainty that Auburn would not take him?

Auburn was in dire straits last year after firing Chizik and Kirby Smart passed on them. Petrino was practically begging for the job and they told him to get lost.

Auburn fans know more than I do, but the word around here is that they gave him a courtesy conference call and he got chippy when they started after him about Harleygate and whether he'd changed, so they hung up. I also heard after that he was begging them for another chance and that he offered to fly himself and his wife to Auburn on their own dime to interview.

The disengagement of talks between Auburn and Kirby Smart was mutual.

Auburn didn't turn Kirby Smart down, and likewise.
